Partnering to improve health and wellbeing

Pacific Blue Cross has partnered with BC Women’s Health Foundation to create awareness of the gaps that exist in women’s health care. Given over 50% of the population in BC are women and they make up a similar percentage of BC’s workforce, we are finding new solutions.

Unmasking Gender Inequity

For women in BC, the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic is being felt in almost every facet of life: through job losses, risk of infection, greater caregiving responsibilities, and social and physical isolation which can lead to a higher risk of intimate partner violence. The collective impact of these pandemic-related factors on women can have direct consequences on their health and well-being.

To Unmask Gender Inequity in health, Pacific Blue Cross has sponsored a new report from the BC Women’s Health Foundation spotlighting the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on women’s health. At Pacific Blue Cross, we support the call for women's unique health needs to be seen as essential for pandemic recovery plans and beyond.

You're not Alone

To gauge how the pandemic has been impacting British Columbians, we commissioned a survey of over one thousand adults across the province. It shows that a significant number of us have experienced mental health challenges since the pandemic began—yet a majority haven’t engaged professional help for three key reasons:

  • We don’t know where to get help (even in our own communities)
  • We find it difficult to access mental health services
  • We don’t feel safe in acknowledging we have a mental health condition

Uncovering healthcare realities for women in BC

In the fall of 2019, in partnership with Pacific Blue Cross, the BC Women’s Health Foundation released In Her Words, a report and accompanying stories that uncovered the stark realities of how women of all ages, ethnicities, and socioeconomic groups interact with the healthcare system in BC.

In Her Words provided not only critically important baseline data, but served as a catalyst for change throughout the healthcare system. As BCWHF’s Pillar Partner, the findings inspired us to develop a gender-focus to our insurance products that recognizes the unique needs of women. It also shaped the focus for the Pacific Blue Cross Women’s Health Care Forum in October 2019 put on by the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade. Bringing together healthcare experts with business leaders provided a crucial opportunity for dialogue on the realities of the gender health gap, and multi-dimensional solutions to address these inequities in organizations.
