Why do my clients need travel insurance?

FAQ – Trip Cancellation & Interruption

  1. What exactly does Trip Cancellation and Interruption insurance cover?

With this benefit, we will reimburse your non-refundable travel costs in the event that any Covered Person or travelling companion experience an accident, illness, or other unforeseen fortuitous event – an event that happens by chance and not on purpose - that is beyond their control.

  2. I had a huge problem with my airline refund because of COVID and they only gave me a credit, I never got my money back and I’m so mad I’ll never use that airline. I’m going to purchase Trip Cancellation insurance so that doesn’t happen again.

Our Trip Cancellation plans are intended to cover non-refundable prepaid travel expenses related to your travel. If you are offered a credit or any kind of voucher from your trip provider, even if you choose to refuse them, then we would not reimburse these costs.  We consider a voucher or credit to be a refund.

  3. I want to add trip cancellation insurance to my plan but I bought it two weeks ago. Can I do that?

We can certainly offer you trip cancellation from today’s date so that you have coverage up to your departure date, but we can’t backdate the policy to the day you purchased the trip.

Also, it is important to know that because you purchased more than 72 hours ago, there will be a 72 hour waiting period before you can make a claim.  Today is Monday, so you would not be able to make a claim for anything that happens before Thursday.  Does that still work for you?

  4. If your plans don’t pay me if I have to cancel because of COVID, why would I even bother right now?

Our trip cancellation plans still protect you for all of the unforeseen reasons that existed before COVID.  You could be out a lot of money if you or one of your travelling companions was in a car accident, or if a loved one fell ill and you had to cancel your travel plans to care for them.

  5. If I purchase trip cancellation insurance, and I have to cancel because I’ve caught COVID, will I be able to get my trip costs reimbursed?

Yes. If you or your traveling companion contract COVID-19 and are forced to cancel your travel plans, you can make a claim against your policy, subject to all of other exclusions, such as pre-existing conditions.  If you have already experienced symptoms of COVID prior to purchasing the insurance, you may not be able to make a claim.  Please read the policy document thoroughly.

FAQ – Leveraging the new Travel Contract language to help you explain coverage to our Members

  1. Member lives in Vancouver. She tells you, “We are visiting with my parents for a few days in Kelowna and then we will fly out of the airport to Disneyland from there. I only need coverage from August 14th to August 21st. “

In order for your coverage to be valid, you must have purchased coverage for your entire Trip.  What we mean by Trip is, “the time between and inclusive of the date that you leave your ordinary residence in Canada to the date you return to your ordinary residence in Canada.”

  2. I don’t want to pay for coverage from when I leave my house. That doesn’t make sense, it’s not part of my vacation and it will cost more! OR Is it worthwhile to buy a PBC travel plan if I’m staying in BC this summer?

Actually, there are certain benefits in your travel plan that begin as soon as you leave your ordinary residence in Canada.

Let’s say you’re leaving your house on August 12th.  You stop at a restaurant on your way to the airport, and you slip and fall, badly twisting your ankle.

Even though you haven’t left BC and your MSP covers your medical costs, you may have to delay your departure by a few days.  Or, you may get stuck overnight in the city, waiting for the next available flight.  PBC travel plans have options to protect you for these unexpected expenses, even if you haven’t left your home province!

  3. In my Annual plan, when do I start counting my coverage days?

Your coverage starts on your Departure Date, which means the day your Trip starts – and this is the date that you leave your ordinary residence in Canada.  So you start counting your days as soon as you leave your house – even if you make stops in Canada before you travel internationally.

FAQ – Eligibilty

  1. After the travel bans are lifted, am I covered for COVID if I purchase the pre-existing condition coverage?

It depends.  All pre-existing conditions must be stable for at least 7 days prior to departure, so be sure to check these to make sure you can meet these eligibility requirements.  However, there are other restrictions for COVID specifically.

You are not able to purchase travel insurance with us if, within the past 30 days, you have:

    • tested positive for COVID-19; or
    • been diagnosed with COVID-19 by a medical professional; or
    • been Quarantined for any reason, including as a result of contact tracing

Also, as with any pre-existing condition, please check with your physician to make sure that they have cleared you for travel before you leave, because your coverage may be void if you have been advised against traveling by a Physician or other primary care provider – even if you purchase the pre-existing condition waiver.
