Pacific Blue Cross marks National Indigenous Peoples Day, strengthens commitment to Indigenous inclusion
Wednesday, Jun 21, 2023We proudly announce receiving the Employer of Choice Certification by Indigenous Works as we continue our journey to improve the health and wellbeing for Indigenous people and communities in British Columbia.
As a proud provider of health benefits in BC, Pacific Blue Cross joins in acknowledging and celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day, as well as National Indigenous History Month, a time to celebrate and honour the rich and diverse cultures, languages and heritage of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.
We are committed to building partnerships with Indigenous people and communities in BC to advance reconciliation through dialogue, understanding and action. Internally, the Indigenous Works Employer of Choice Certification affirms our commitment to ongoing and continuous improvement of our Indigenous employment and workplace inclusion goals.
“By adopting Indigenous workplace design standards, we hope to create an inclusive and respectful environment that honours Indigenous values, worldviews, history, and culture,” says Mary Martin, Director of Learning and Engagement at Pacific Blue Cross. “You don't know what you don't know, so this audit helped us address and bridge gaps we didn’t know we had. We’re committed to providing Indigenous employees with equal opportunities for professional development and advancement, ensuring they experience a culturally safe workplace.”
While we take a moment to celebrate this recognition, we continue to support Indigenous inclusion through our dedication to Call to Action 92 and the Declaration of Commitment on Cultural Safety and Humility in Health Services, which lives through our onboarding process and ongoing training programs. We have also created multiple DE&I eLearning modules in partnership with the First Nations Health Authority; these free resources are available to workplaces or any individual who is interested in expanding their DE&I knowledge.
Celebrate this day by learning more about the experiences and histories of Indigenous Peoples and participating in activities in your community.
