Pride across the globe: three destinations you can’t miss

Take a once in a lifetime trip to celebrate Pride in a new culture, while ensuring your safety.

Whether you attend Pride to celebrate your individual identity or to honour those who came before you, it can be an exciting opportunity to meet new people, engage in new experiences, and build community. With a number of cities hosting celebrations outside of June and July, it’s possible to experience Pride both at home and away. You can explore a new city, discover local cultures and experience how 2SLGBTQI+ Pride is celebrated across diverse communities.

Article contents:

  1. Montevideo, Uruguay: Enjoy this relaxed beach city’s Pride in late September.
  2. Amsterdam, Netherlands: Celebrate Pride on the canal in late July.
  3. Auckland, New Zealand: Join the party on Karangahape Road in mid-February.
  4. Considerations for 2SLGBTQIA+ travellers: Do your research before booking any trip.

Pride dates: September 27, 2024
Ideal for: Beach lovers and yerba mate enthusiasts

If you’ve always wanted to explore Latin America, look no further than Montevideo. The relaxed capital of one of the most 2SLGBTQI+ friendly countries in South America is often compared to Buenos Aires, but with a slower pace and better quality of life. Whether you opt to stroll along the waterfront promenade known as the Rambla, drink Uruguayan yerba mate, or visit one of the local beautiful beaches or markets, you’re guaranteed to have a memorable trip. There are a handful of 2SLGBTQI+ bars and hangouts, Chains and Il Tempo being the most well-known, but everywhere in Montevideo is welcoming to people of all sexualities and gender identities.

Montevideo’s Pride, also known as the Diversity March, has been growing since the 1990s, and takes place on the last Friday of September.

Pride dates: July 27 – August 4, 2024
Ideal for: History buffs and people watchers

Amsterdam makes it onto every 2SLGBTQI+ travel list – and for good reason. The Netherlands was the first country to legalize same-sex marriage in 2001, and they’ve continued to set the standard for acceptance and inclusion ever since. If you visit this scenic capital of Netherlands, look for “Reguliersdwarsstraat,” where you can find most of the 2SLGBTQI+ bars, stores, clubs and cafes – that being said, everywhere in Amsterdam is welcoming and friendly to all travelers.

Amsterdam’s Pride celebrations take place in late July and early August, with the most unique being a Parade on the canals. Enjoy this from a canal-side café for a special (and very Dutch) celebration!

Pride dates: February 15, 2025
Ideal for: Nature lovers and thrill seekers

Auckland may be most famous for its lush scenery and for being the iconic backdrop to epic fantasy movies, but it’s also one of the most 2SLGBTQI+ friendly cities in the world.

In downtown Auckland lies Karangahape Road (commonly known as K’ Road), a lively and vibrant district with a thriving 2SLGBTQI+ community. With incredible street art, shopping, world-class restaurants, and plenty of bars, there’s something here for every traveler. If outdoor adventures are what you’re looking for, you’ll be well-served in Auckland, with hiking, waterfalls, river rafting, sky diving and more.

Auckland’s Rainbow Parade and Pride celebrations take place in mid-February, which is summertime in the Southern Hemisphere. Swap British Columbia’s dreary, dark winter for Auckland’s warm weather and sunny skies.

Before you plan any trip, make sure you research and understand the local laws and social customs that could impact your travels. While many countries are making significant strides to improve inclusion of 2SLGBTQI+ individuals and communities, discrimination sadly still exists in many parts of the world. Always prioritize your safety and comfort.

Before you go, be sure to check for travel advisories for your destination.
