What to know about submitting a dental claim

Submitting dental claims for dental services is easy since most dental offices can submit your claim on your behalf and you only have to pay for the amount not covered by your plan. But here’s some advice to help you minimize your out-of-pocket costs when visiting your dentist.

Ask your dentist if they bill according to your insurance company’s Dental Fee Guide. You see, dental services are paid according to an established fee guide. This is an amount determined by the average cost of a service across all dental providers. If your dentist charges more for a particular service than the guide allows, you may be paying more than you need to because you will need to pay for any balance not covered by your plan as well as any amount in excess of the Dental Fee Guide.

You want to know your claim is going to be covered, but you may not be able to look up your coverage while you’re at the dentist. That’s why we also provide tools for dentists to look up your coverage while your visiting their office. This is so you can have a meaningful discussion about what treatment options are available within your benefit coverage. You can also request to have your treatment option submitted as a pre-authorization in order to know exactly what and how much will be covered before proceeding with your treatment plan.

If direct billing your insurance company isn’t available at your dental office, you may pay your dentist in full, the dental office will give you a completed claim form and receipt. Claims forms are available for download from our website. Submit your completed claim form and receipt to us.

We suggest that you submit claims regularly instead of saving your receipts to claim once a year. Receipts can get lost or you may miss the claiming deadline. Remember the claiming deadline for most dental plans is 12 months from the date of service.
